Paint, stain or varnish?

Wood paint

A solid, opaque finish in any colour — ideal for skirting, doors and frames where you want a clean, consistent look matching your trim scheme.

Wood stain

Soaks into the timber rather than sitting on top, enhancing the natural grain while still offering protection — popular for staircases and feature woodwork.

Varnish

Is it better to paint or stain wood?

It depends on the timber, its condition and the finish you want. Paint provides a solid colour and a protective coating; stain penetrates the timber to enhance the natural grain. Paint is often preferred for fascias and previously painted woodwork; stains for fencing, decking and natural timber features.

Can varnished wood be painted?

Yes, but it must be properly prepared — cleaned, lightly sanded to remove the sheen, repaired, then primed with a suitable adhesion primer before undercoats and topcoats. Correct preparation is the key to a durable finish.

Do knots in timber need special treatment?

Yes — knots should be sealed with a specialist knotting solution or stain-blocking primer before painting, because natural resins can bleed through the paint and cause yellow or brown staining over time.

What are the signs my woodwork needs attention?

Yellowing gloss, cracking or peeling around joints and edges, swelling or sticking doors, flaking fascias and soffits, faded or patchy stain, and draughty window frames. Catching these early is usually more cost-effective than letting them get worse.
